Metso Paper offers a new way to integrate mill engineering, paper finishing machines and their control systems into one streamlined entity. With the new OptiStream concept, roll finishing efficiency is increased and waste is reduced in the various phases of the paper finishing process.

Thanks to OptiStream, paper finishing becomes one process that is controlled by one operation team. This new concept integrates parent reel handling, winding, roll handling and wrapping as well as related information management into one seamless entity. The DNAroAd production tracking system, as a part of metsoDNA MES product family, tracks production from the reel to the warehouse and also controls all peripheral devices in the roll finishing area. Because manual functions are minimized, operators are free to concentrate on the most essential tasks of the process: monitoring and control of the process and the roll quality. The whole roll finishing area can be supervised from one control room using uniform user interfaces.

Automated functions such as inline parent reel transfer, automatic butt-joint splicing and automatic winder deck increase operator safety and reduce damage to rolls which means less waste. The system provides on-line information on actual machine, equipment and production status. Order and planning data are used to control the process. Production plans and product-specific requirements are transferred to each machine in the process.

OptiStream is a space-saving concept: both the parent reel and customer roll handling and transport distances have been optimized through effective layout planning. As one supplier is responsible for the delivery of all machines and software for the whole roll finishing area, project organization at the paper mill is streamlined when compared to conventional deliveries. By eliminating overlapping activities in project management, installation and start-up, total investment cost is significantly reduced.

The OptiStream concept can be adapted to both new installations and rebuilds of existing finishing operations.
