Around the world, we have more than 260 fluidized bed boiler references based on BFB (bubbling fluidized bed) and CFB (circulating fluidized bed) technologies, and most of them are designed to burn more than one fuel.
Multifuel capability in a boiler provides you with operational flexibility and enables you to always choose the most economic fuel portfolio based on individual fuel availability and price.
Valmet’s solution for high moisture content and low heating value fuels, such as biomass, sludge and peat, is the Valmet BFB Boiler based on bubbling fluidized bed technology. For fuels with a high heating value, such as coal, pet coke, recycled wood or SRF, we recommend the Valmet CFB Boiler based on circulating fluidized bed technology.
R&D Center for testing fuels
In addition to the large installed base, Valmet’s in-depth fuel expertise builds on the testing capability in its R&D Center in Tampere, Finland. There are several test reactors and boilers ranging from 100 kW to 4 MW in which new fuels can be tested before being commercially adopted.

The Dalkia story turned to a greener page
The Dalkia combined heat and power plant in Facture, southwest France has an extensive Valmet solution for biomass processing. The plant uses mainly bark and forest residues as fuel to produce 50 megawatts of electricity for the national grid and 74 megawatts of process steam for Smurfit Kappa’s paper mill.
