Climate change is a global challenge. NASA’s website documents compelling evidence on rapid climate change. The planet’s average surface temperature has risen by about 1.1 degrees Celsius since the late 19th century. The ocean has absorbed much of this increased heat, with the top 100 meters of ocean showing warming of more than 0.33 degrees Celsius since 1969. The Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have decreased in mass, and glaciers are retreating almost everywhere around the world. Satellite observations reveal that the amount of spring snow cover in the Northern Hemisphere has decreased over the past five decades, and the snow is melting earlier. The global sea level rose by about 29 centimeters in the last century. The rate in the last two decades has been nearly double that of the last century and is accelerating slightly every year. Both the extent and thickness of Arctic sea ice has declined rapidly in recent decades. Extreme weather conditions like record high temperatures and intense rainfalls are increasing.

Climate change is increasingly recognized, and carbon neutrality targets have been set around the world. Many countries are also linking recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic with the push for a greener economy. Companies, regardless of the industry, have also started to act on a wide scale, setting themselves ambitious emission reduction targets.

At Valmet, we believe that every action is important, and that technology plays a crucial role in combating climate change. In this magazine, you can read about Valmet’s Climate Program, which includes ambitious CO₂ emissions reduction targets and concrete actions for the entire value chain. We aim to support our suppliers, reduce our own operations’ carbon footprint, and help our customers become carbon neutral.

Let’s move forward together toward a carbon neutral future!
