Nanjing Forestry University students and teachers visit Valmet Jiading

Valmet’s social responsibility program supports selected local projects around the world that promote science, nature and equal opportunities. In China, Valmet continues its over 14 years' tradition to grant scholarships to undergraduate students in three industry universities and sets up new scholarships to postgraduate students in five industry universities in collaboration with China Education Development Foundation (CEDF).

One of the industry universities Valmet cooperates with is Nanjing Forestry University. Its students have been granted undergraduate scholarships since 2009 and it continues to be one of the universities in the new postgraduate scholarship program. 

Since 2020, Valmet has offered courses in "Mechanical Pulping BCTMP Technology" and "Chemical Pulping Technology", strengthening the students' understanding of advanced pulping technologies and related equipment as well as giving them an overview of China's pulp and paper industry and enhancing their interest in the field.

Important insight to modern manufacturing environment

To take the cooperation further, 19 outstanding students accompanied by three teachers from the College of Light Industry and Food of Nanjing Forestry University visited Valmet in Jiading in October 2023. The day was full of activities, such as a demo presentation at the Jiading Performance Center, a tour around the production facilities, lunch at the company cafeteria and some fun at Valmet Jiading's Health Room.

During the visit, Jiang Yong, Preassembly and Packing Manager, and Leon Ji, Lead Engineer of P&E, also Nanjing Forestry University graduates, talked about their careers so far and shared valuable experiences with the younger students. The session inspired the visitors to a lively discussion and many questions related to career development were asked and answered.

The sneak peek to Valmet's working environment and company atmosphere was highly appreciated by the teachers and students.

“We want to thank Valmet for organizing this visit. I believe everything we heard and saw will benefit our students in their future studies and career choice,” Jiang Bo, Teaching Director of the Paper Making Department, says.

“Up to date, we have over 40 employees that have graduated from Nanjing Forestry University, and appreciate the knowledge and skills they have built through their education. We hope to further strengthen our cooperation with Nanjing Forestry University with initiatives such as these visits, and I believe that by doing so we will certainly succeed in educating future talents and promoting the development of the industry in China," Marsha Gao, Senior Regional HR Manager at Valmet, concludes.

Valmet's global social responsibility program

Valmet has expanded its global social responsibility program initiated in 2020 with new area-specific local projects around the world.

Valmet’s social responsibility program is part of the company’s sustainability agenda implementation. The program is based on three themes promoting science, nature and equal opportunities: ‘​Towards the future with science’, ‘Protecting the planet for next generations’​ and ‘Equal opportunities for wellbeing’​.

Based on these themes, several local projects in Valmet’s operating areas around the world have been selected to the program. Valmet’s local personnel has participated in the planning and preparation of the projects, and the final selection has been made by employee voting.
