What happens to wood chips during refining?

In the refining stage, pre-treated wood chips are fed into a high-consistency refiner, where they pass between two large discs—one stationary, one rotating. The intense mechanical forces applied here separate the chips into individual fibers.

Refining goes beyond separation: it develops the fiber surfaces, enhancing flexibility and bonding potential. Operating at 30–50% consistency, this process ensures efficient energy transfer and effective fiber development. The result is a pulp that’s tailored for strength, bulk, and cleanliness – ready to meet the demands of todays and future paper and board products.
