Valmet, the fiber and paper technology business area of Metso Corporation, will rebuild a papermaking line at Stora Enso Fine Paper’s Oulu mill in Finland. The rebuild, valued at nearly EUR 30 million, will be carried out in November 2001. The deal is the fifth significant order concerning the manufacture of coated fine paper received by the fiber and paper technology business area this year.

The rebuild of Oulu’s production line 6, originally supplied by Valmet in 1991, will increase its annual capacity by a good 20% to about 515,000 tonnes of coated woodfree printing papers. The delivery will comprise rebuilds of the paper machine, air systems, coater, calenders, winders and control system, and will also include a second roll wrapping machine. The rebuild will also improve the quality of the end product, due to the more even base paper and higher coating volumes achieved.

The main emphasis of the project will be on the paper machine rebuild. The headbox will be converted for dilution-control, the wire section will be rebuilt, and the press section will be modernized by replacing the conventional 3rd press with a shoe press. The dryer section will also be partly rebuilt. Changes to the air systems will mainly take place in the forming and dryer sections. The most significant aspects of the coater modernization will be the rebuild of the coating stations, and an upgrade of the drying concept. The new roll wrapping machine will be of the StreamLine type. The paper machine’s wire width is 9 m and the basis weight range of the end product will be 115-250 g/m2.

The Valmet and Neles Automation units at Jyväskylä, Järvenpää, Turku, Tampere, Valkeakoski and Hollola in Finland will participate in the delivery.

The paper produced by Oulu’s PM 6 is and will be mainly used for brochures and advertising material. The demand for this paper grade has been strong for the last decade, and the market is expected to remain favorable with 4-5% average annual growth continuing in the coming years. The investment now underway will bring production up to a level of 900,000 tonnes. The mill’s other paper machine, PM 7, was delivered by Valmet three years ago.
