The demand for newsprint and magazine paper in the world has decreased and in order to adapt to this change, SCA decided to shut down the production of newsprint and LWC at the Ortviken mill in Sweden and focus on producing CTMP pulp instead. A project was started in 2021 to carry out the conversion. Valmet delivered the CTMP plant rebuild and the new dewatering, drying and baling. It included the first Fiber flash dryer ever built according to Valmet’s own concept. The new line was taken over by SCA in March 2023.

Customer challenge
The demand for newsprint and magazine paper in the world has decreased. To adapt to this change, SCA decided to shut down the production of newsprint and LWC at their Ortviken mill and focus on producing CTMP pulp instead.
Solution
New flash drying and baling and rebuild of existing integrated thermomechanical pulp (TMP) production line into a chemi-thermomechanical pulp (CTMP) market pulp line, which will have a capacity of 300,000 tonnes per year.
The flash drying line includes two high consistency output TwinRoll presses for dewatering, Slab presses for bale forming and a baling line with a Wrapper applyer using paper as wrapping. Additionally, two identical flash dryers, developed with focus on energy efficiency, are part of the delivery including engineering, installation, training, start-up and commissioning.
Valmet and SCA have together developed a concept to produce CTMP at best possible operating expense using a combination of existing and new equipment. The unique chip treatment method, part of the HT-CTMP line currently used at SCA’s Östrand mill, is utilized also in the rebuilt line at Ortviken.
Results
The rebuilt TMP line, now converted to high temperature chemi-thermomechanical pulp, HT-CTMP, production has in April 2023 been taken over and is now operated by SCA Ortviken pulp mill. Tests runs have been executed and the quality of required pulp product mix has been approved.
The flash drying system and baling line was taken over in mid-February 2023, but the first pulp bale was produced already in December 2022.
