Fiber savings with screen room rebuild

Södra Cell Mönsterås, located in Sweden, is one of the world’s largest producers of TCF bleached kraft pulp. Its customers include paper mills throughout the world, and it reliably produces and delivers pulp of high quality. When the mill realized they were losing about four tonnes of accept fiber each day during softwood production, they quickly started to look for a solution to fix the problem.

Both Karin Dernegård, Technical Process Manager at Mönsterås Mill (on the left) and Annika Zetterlund of Valmet agree that the 75% reduction in fiber loss impacts the mill’s profitability positively, and as less water is used, the production is more environmentally friendly.

“We definitely had a problem and we selected Valmet to solve it because of the professional impression their staff left us with while discussing the problem with us,” says Karin Dernegård, Technical Process Manager at the mill.

Valmet rebuilt the third screen and replaced the cyclone cleaners with a fourth screen in a conventional screen room. A screen basket with a dilution belt was added to the third screen. Furthermore, a number of the cyclone cleaners were replaced with an OptiScreen Fine screen to screen fine rejects. Thanks to these improvements the mill now loses about one tonne of accept fiber per day, resulting in 75% savings in accept fiber.
