Winder upgrade boosts production at Bohui Paper in China
A winder upgrade helped Bohui Paper’s Shandong mill meet its evolving production targets. With Valmet’s automated slitter solution, the winder now handles a wide range of paper grades and roll widths seamlessly, significantly improving the overall winder performance and increasing production capacity.
Bohui Paper’s Shandong mill and its PM8 produce premium fine paper with an annual capacity of 450 thousand tons. With the support of Bohui Production Engineering and Valmet teams, the annual output has reached 600 thousand tons for the 2025 fiscal year. To respond to the increasingly diverse market needs, the mill planned to add digital printing paper to its product portfolio. However, the mill’s existing winder lacked the flexibility and capacity required to meet the higher production targets.
Tailored solution delivered successfully
To overcome the production bottleneck, Shandong mill turned to Valmet for a safe, effective, and cost-efficient solution. Valmet proposed an upgrade that met all performance requirements without the need for a new winder.
The automated slitter upgrade increased the number of slitter pairs from 19 to 28. Each can be positioned precisely according to production specifications, and automatic positioning is completed within 30 seconds. The upgrade enables an average minimum slitting width of 400 mm, supporting a wide variety of paper grades and roll widths.
The delivery completed smoothly, and installation required minimum downtime at the mill. Hou Donghai, Production Engineering Manager at Bohui Paper, highlights the strong cooperation with Valmet throughout the project.
“Everything was well organized, and the equipment was delivered, installed, and commissioned on time. Communication was open and any issues were resolved immediately,” Hou Donghai, Production Engineering Manager at Bohui Paper.
Outstanding results
The upgrade improved overall winder performance and enabled the mill to meet its production targets for both flexibility and capacity.
“We are very satisfied with the result. Since the winder upgrade, we have increased our digital printing paper production,” Hou Donghai says.
