When a roll cover makes the difference – Valmet Sizer Roll Cover CF-M improves quality and cuts costs at Huachuan Industry in China

Huachuan Industry’s PM 8 produces glassine base paper, a high‑end specialty grade that requires a highly controlled surface‑sizing process to achieve the right density, translucency, and resistance to oil and moisture. Because of this, the mill demands exceptional stability and surface properties of its film sizer rolls.

The mill approached Valmet with clear expectations: they wanted to extend the service life of the sizer roll cover while maintaining consistent sizing performance and final product quality. Their existing polyurethane covers required replacement approximately every twenty days. Toward the end of each cycle, the covers often developed issues such as missing starch spots and gloss streaks, leading to paper defects. The combination of aggressive sizing chemicals and surface wear also meant the rolls required intensive cleaning after every web break or grade change – otherwise production efficiency suffered.

A new roll cover solution: Valmet Sizer Roll Cover CF-M

After assessing the mill’s operating conditions, Valmet recommended the new Valmet Sizer Roll Cover CF‑M polyurethane cover. Its advanced formulation improves film formation and roll cleanability, while enhanced surface‑wear resistance keeps the roll profile and roughness stable throughout the running period.

The improvement was immediate and significant. The service life of the sizer roll cover increased from about twenty days to more than 45 days, eliminating frequent roll changes and reducing maintenance costs. The new cover also removed defects caused by sizing skips, missing sizing, and gloss streaks – issues that previously led to uneven sizing and customer complaints.
