The world's largest cartonboard machine, Ningbo Xiaogang PM 1 in Xiaogang, Ningbo, People's Republic of China, has exceeded its quality and production targets.

The manufacture of coated board began only a few days after the successful start-up of the cartonboard machine in November. The coated quality was saleable from the first roll and within the first week, the quality level exceeded industry standards. Especially the gloss and smoothness properties of the surface were excellent. And three weeks after the start-up, the machine also exceeded target production rates on several basis weights.

This is a clear indication that the machine concept employed at Ningbo is the best possible for this board grade.

Ningbo Xiaogang PM 1 is a greenfield board making line delivered by Metso Paper. Metso’s delivery consisted of a complete, eight-line stock preparation system including analyzers and valves and a complete board machine including machine controls, on-machine coating, air systems and mill engineering.

The new line produces 700,000 tons/year of white lined chipboard (WLC) with a basis weight range of 250 to 450 g/m². The five-ply board line has a trim width of 8.1 m and a design speed of 900 m/min.
