Valmet’s digital solutions to optimize district heating production and energy balance for Gren in Tartu, Estonia

Gren’s biomass-fired Tartu CHP plant plays a key role in supplying both electricity and heat to Tartu, with the Anne Boiler Plant providing additional capacity for the city’s district heating network.

Valmet’s digitally enabled solutions optimize energy production at Gren’s Tartu CHP plant, supporting greater flexibility, efficiency and cost performance.

Gren operates a biomass-fired Tartu combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant with a capacity of 25 MW of electricity and 65 MW of heat, as well as the Anne Boiler Plant, which provides additional heat capacity for Tartu’s district heating network. Together, the plants play an important role in supplying heat to the city’s district heating network.

The order is included in Valmet’s orders received of the second quarter 2026. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The delivery will be taken over by the customer during the spring 2027.

Earlier this year, Valmet announced the delivery of a flue gas condenser and heat pumps to Gren’s Tartu CHP plant.

Delivery’s technical information

The delivery includes the Valmet DNAe District Heating Manager and Valmet DNAe Energy Balance Optimizer, which will be integrated with the company’s existing Valmet Distributed Control System (DCS).  

Both solutions are part of Valmet’s digital solutions portfolio for the energy and process industries. Valmet DNAe District Heating Manager optimizes district heating production and consumption, helping reduce heat losses and operating costs. Valmet DNAe Energy Balance Optimizer manages energy production and consumption in line with market trades and production plans, supports reserve market participation, and helps minimize imbalance costs.
