Örtofta CHP project enters next phase

Kraftringen Energi’s new biomass-based CHP plant in Örtofta

Kraftringen Energi’s new biomass-based combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Örtofta, Sweden, is progressing into a major new phase. After a year of groundwork and structural construction, the project is now transitioning into a new stage, where technology comes to life stage where advanced technology is installed and brought into operation.

This moment marks the beginning of extensive on-site installation work, signaling a clear shift from planning to execution.

Building the heart of the plant

As one of the key technology providers in the project, Valmet is responsible for delivering the biomass boiler and flue gas cleaning systems, which form the core of the plant’s heat and power production.

With the structure of the new unit rising next to the existing plant, Valmet’s teams are now preparing to install and integrate these systems. This phase is crucial, as it is where design expertise and engineering solutions are transformed into a fully functioning energy facility. Strong emphasis is also placed on close cooperation with Kraftringen and other suppliers during this stage.

Valmet’s delivery is based on proven BFB boiler technology combined with advanced flue gas cleaning, ensuring reliable operation while keeping emissions low.

A collaborative and complex phase

The start of installation works also signals a more intensive and collaborative stage of the project. Multiple systems must come together seamlessly within a limited space and a strict schedule.

Close cooperation is essential to ensure the smooth integration of the boiler and environmental systems into the overall plant. The focus remains on maintaining high safety standards, ensuring quality, and keeping the project on schedule.

Supporting a long-term energy vision

Once completed, the new CHP plant will play a vital role in securing the region’s supply of district heat and electricity. It will also enable the future expansion of process steam deliveries, supporting industrial needs and regional growth.

By using renewable biomass fuels, the facility will further strengthen Kraftringen’s already low-carbon energy production, aligning well with broader sustainability targets.

Toward 2028 and beyond

The Örtofta CHP project is Kraftringen’s largest investment to date and a major step in modernizing its energy infrastructure. The plant is expected to be completed and handed over in 2028.

For Valmet, participation in the project highlights its role as a trusted partner in delivering advanced biomass boiler and flue gas solutions, technologies that support customers in transitioning toward more sustainable, efficient, and future-proof heat and power production.
