Turning admiration into leadership: Simone Licari’s career journey
What starts as admiration can turn into a defining career path. For Simone Licari, an early encounter with Valmet’s technology sparked a vision that would guide his professional journey – one that has led him to a leadership role at the heart of innovation.
When Simone Licari first encountered Valmet in 2004, he wasn’t yet part of the company – but he already knew he wanted to be.
“I was working as a rewinder start-up engineer for an Italian company,” Simone recalls. “During a machine commissioning, I had the opportunity to observe the Valmet team. I was truly impressed by their expertise and professionalism.”
That moment stayed with him. What started as admiration quickly turned into ambition. “I remember thinking: one day, I want to be part of that team.”
Today, that ambition has become reality. Simone now leads a team of Product Managers and Development Engineers within the Advanced Tissue Machines group in Valmet's Tissue Converting location in Lucca, Italy, helping shape the next generation of tissue technologies.
Driving sustainability every day
In Simone’s field, sustainability isn’t a distant goal, it’s part of everyday work. “Reducing CO₂ emissions is a daily priority in tissue machine product management,” he explains. “It’s an energy-intensive process, so every improvement matters.” Knowing that his work contributes to a more sustainable future adds purpose to his role.
Leading with trust across borders
Simone’s days begin early – and with a personal touch. “My typical day starts at 7:30 a.m. with a good Italian espresso at the office,” he says with a smile.
From there, his focus shifts quickly to people. With most of his team based in Sweden, distance could be a challenge but Simone has turned it into a strength.
“It’s essential to create the same sense of presence and engagement as if we were sitting in the same room,” he explains. “I make sure we have regular check-ins and structured follow-ups.”
His leadership style is clear: enable others to succeed. “My role is to help my team perform at their best – removing obstacles and opening the right doors when needed.”

Growing through opportunity
Looking back, Simone sees Valmet as a place where growth is not only possible – it’s encouraged. “Throughout my journey, I’ve been fortunate to work with managers who acted as true role models. They supported me, coached me, and pushed me to grow.”
Training programs and global collaboration have also played a key role. “They’ve helped me broaden my perspective and navigate effectively in an international environment.”
A team that cares
For Simone, one of the most meaningful aspects of his work is the team he leads.
“I work alongside professionals who truly care about their work, their products, and most importantly, their customers,” he says. “That shared commitment makes a big difference.”
This culture of ownership and collaboration is deeply connected to Valmet’s leadership principles. “They empower us to move faster, take responsibility, and collaborate effectively. I feel trusted to lead and make decisions.”

During his freetime, Simone enjoys walking around Collodi, the charming hometown of the Pinocchio fairy tale.
Proud moments and global motivation
Among many milestones, one moment stands out.
“I still remember my first tissue plant start-up wearing a Valmet shirt,” Simone says. “That was a proud moment.”
Today, what continues to motivate him is the global impact of his work. “Working with colleagues around the world and seeing customer satisfaction when projects succeed—those are the moments that keep me motivated.”
Advice for future colleagues
For those considering a career at Valmet, Simone’s message is simple: “Valmet is a company full of opportunities. My own career journey from start-up engineer to leading a team in another country shows what’s possible.”
And if he had to describe Valmet in one word? “Trust,” he says without hesitation. “We are empowered, supported by our leaders, and encouraged to take responsibility.”
