Valmet Oyj’s trade press release on August 28, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. EEST

Valmet will deliver a recovery boiler modification including a new secondary superheater to Stora Enso’s Varkaus Mill in Finland. In addition, Stora Enso and Valmet have signed a three-year cooperation agreement covering process monitoring and operator training to support continuous performance improvement at the mill. The mill has an annual production capacity of 420 000 tonnes of containerboard and 335 000 tonnes of pulp.

“We value Valmet’s technical expertise and long experience with recovery boilers. We expect the new superheater and additional modifications to bring further stability to the mill’s operation and lower its maintenance costs. With Valmet’s support, we continue to develop our processes and maintain the equipment in optimal operating conditions for years to come,” says Antti Aartolahti, Operation Manager, Stora Enso Varkaus Pulp Mill.

“The boiler modification is a key lifecycle investment that helps Stora Enso ensure reliable production at the Varkaus Mill. It combines Valmet’s proven recovery boiler technology with our service expertise, and we are proud to support the customer’s production goals with this long-term cooperation,” says Karoliina Gunnila, Sales Manager, Services, Recovery, Energy and Circularity, Valmet.

Valmet’s delivery includes replacement of the recovery boiler’s secondary superheater with Valmet’s tubular superheater. In connection with the installation, the current superheater arrangement will be modified. Additionally, Valmet will support Stora Enso Varkaus Mill with process monitoring services including remote support and operator training. While the new superheater will be installed in 2027, Valmet will provide maintenance services for the recovery boiler’s annual shutdown already in 2026.

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received for the second quarter of 2026. The value of the order and the cooperation agreement are not disclosed. The delivery and installation will take place in September 2027.
