Valmet DNAe and Quality Control System to increase efficiency at Billerud in Pietarsaari, Finland
Valmet has received an order from Billerud to supply the Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System and a Valmet IQ Quality Control System to its production facility in Pietarsaari, Finland.

“We chose Valmet for the technical strengths of their solutions, compatibility with the Cybersecurity Resilience Act (CRA), usability, overall user experience, and strong automation service capabilities following the project completion. Since the mill produces a wide range of kraft, sack, and formable paper grades, it’s essential to extend automatic grade change capabilities beyond the paper machine to the refining and stock preparation areas. With integrated QCS control and optimization, the production can maximize its potential and minimize waste, especially during frequent grade changes,” says Mikko Hanhikoski, Maintenance Manager, Billerud.
“We are happy to help our customers improve production efficiency and resource utilization through improved automation performance, increased usability, and integration with other systems. During the project, we will customize the Valmet DNAe User Interface to closely match operator workflows, making the system faster and easier to operate. Following the project, our services ensure results throughout the lifecycle of the system and provide the customer with fast access to the expertise they need,” says Janne Tolonen, Sales Manager, Automation Solutions, Valmet.
The order is included in Valmet’s orders received of the second quarter 2025. Its value will not be disclosed. The delivery and start-up are scheduled for the second quarter 2026.
