Valmet’s automation ensures safe and efficient operation at the complex multifuel waste-to-energy plant in Poland

Valmet Oyj’s trade press release, April 9, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. EEST

Valmet will supply the complete Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System (DCS) and safety systems for PEC Gliwice Sp. z o.o.’s new waste-to-energy steam unit, part of the Green Energy Park project under construction in Gliwice, Poland. The order was placed by the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) consortium consisting of Mostostal Zabrze Gliwickie Przedsiębiorstwo Budownictwa Przemysłowego S.A., Oschatz Power GmbH, and Przedsiębiorstwo Remontów Ulic i Mostów S.A. (PRUiM).

The mission-critical automation system is designed to ensure safe and efficient operation of the complex multifuel energy facility. It also aims to maximize energy recovery, enable transparent monitoring and data-driven optimization, and help reduce operating costs and environmental impacts.

“Our Green Energy Park is a key investment within the long-term strategy to modernize the city’s heating and waste processing infrastructure. It is a flagship circular-economy project for the city, and it was essential for us to equip it with modern, reliable technologies ensuring safe and highly efficient operation. We needed a comprehensive automation and safety concept capable of integrating all process areas and supporting the long-term stability of the facility. Advanced automation will play a key role in enabling efficient, safe and reliable operation of this multifuel energy system,” says Krzysztof Szaliński, President of the Management Board, PEC Gliwice Sp. z o.o.

“The facility is being constructed by a consortium responsible for the overall EPC scope, combining construction expertise with advanced process engineering capabilities. In preparing the automation concept for this project, we focused on solutions offering high integration capability, a SIL3-compliant safety architecture, and user-friendly operation supported by advanced analytics. From our previous cooperation with Valmet, we know their technology stands out for its strong track record in waste-to-energy and district-heating applications, as well as its extensive know-how in the energy sector,” says Dr. Christian Linder, Managing Director, Oschatz Power GmbH.

“We are proud to support PEC Gliwice in building a modern, sustainable heat and power facility for the city. This project is an excellent example of how advanced automation contributes to the efficient, safe, and reliable operation of multifuel energy systems. Our state-of-the-art Valmet DNAe DCS, combined with close international-local cooperation, showcases Valmet’s ability to deliver both deep technical competence and responsive support throughout the entire project lifecycle,” says Grzegorz Łach, Sales Manager, Automation Solutions business area, Valmet.

Valmet will supply the Valmet DNAe DCS and safety systems for PEC Gliwice Sp. z o.o.’s new waste-to-energy steam unit in the Green Energy Park project currently under construction in Gliwice, Poland.

Green Energy Park in Gliwice is one of Poland’s most modern circulareconomy energy projects. It expands the existing heating plant with a highefficiency steam block. The new 25 MWt/4 MWe unit includes a gratefired boiler, a backpressure steam turbine, and a 10 MWt heat pump for heat recovery from moist exhaust gases (included in the unit’s total heat capacity). The unit converts nonrecyclable municipal waste, including pre-RDF, shredded bulky waste and dried sewage sludge, into energy, producing over 136,000 MWh of heat and 22,000 MWh of electricity annually. As a result, the city will reduce coal consumption by 25,000 tons and decrease CO emissions by more than 43,000 tons per year.

The order is included in Valmet’s orders received in the first quarter of 2026. The value of the order will not be disclosed. The delivery will be taken over by the customer during 2027 and 2028.

Delivery’s technical information
The delivery includes Valmet DNAe Distributed Control System for monitoring and controlling the entire waste to energy plant, seamlessly integrating all process units from fuel feeding to flue gas treatment. It also features a Safety Instrumented System (SIS) for burner and boiler protection, with safety interlocks up to SIL 3.

In addition, the system provides advanced capabilities for alarming, trending, and long-term data archiving ensuring high availability thanks to advanced diagnostics and safety functions. The scope also includes the integration of auxiliary systems supplied by consortium partners, as well as commissioning support and operator training.

Valmet DNAe is a next-generation distributed control system. As a fully web-based platform, it delivers an industry-leading user experience and cybersecurity.

Valmet provides comprehensive, plant-wide automation solutions for waste-to-energy facilities, further enhancing waste incineration performance and overall operational efficiency through seamless integration and advanced control technologies.
