Valmet to deliver advanced automation for the new Polarstern, enabling precision and sustainability in polar research

Valmet will supply mission-critical automation for the new Polarstern, a next-generation polar research vessel, which will operate in climate and marine research in the Arctic and Antarctic. The vessel, commissioned by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research (AWI), will be constructed by TKMS and is scheduled for delivery in 2030.

Valmet’s automation system will optimize operations to minimize environmental impact in the new Polarstern icebreaker.

The order was included in Valmet’s orders received of the third quarter 2025. The value of the order will not be disclosed.


About the new Polarstern
The new Polarstern will accommodate a crew of 50 and offer research facilities for up to 90 scientists. In addition to its scientific mission, the new Polarstern will play a vital logistical role by resupplying Germany’s Neumayer Station III, the country’s year-round Antarctic research base.

The vessel will be equipped with a state-of-the-art propulsion system and the capability to operate on green methanol. An integrated battery system allows silent, emission-free operation during sensitive measurement operations.

The current Polarstern, operated by the AWI since 1982, has been a central platform for international polar research. It enables multidisciplinary studies in climate science, oceanography, and marine biology, often in collaboration with global partners.


Delivery's technical information
The delivery includes Valmet’s Integrated Automation System, covering machinery, power management, emergency shutdown and vibration monitoring. Valmet will also provide lifecycle services from predictive maintenance to continuous upgrades, ensuring that the system evolves with the vessel’s needs.
