The rebuild to USG Corporation’s Otsego Paper Inc. PM 1 board machine, which formerly produced corrugating medium, successfully started up on April 1, 2008 in its new capacity making high-quality gypsum facing paper. The 4.1 meter-wide (162 in.) PM 1 board line now produces paperboard in a basis weight range of 160–205 g/m² (33–42 lb/1,000 ft²).

Metso’s rebuild delivery included a new three–ply forming section featuring a ValFlo dilution control headbox, two additional ValFlo headboxes, a ValFormer unit, and a Metso roll handling system. Metso also supplied state-of-the-art control equipment for the machine wet end and an equipment conditioning package for existing machine sections.

The Otsego Paper delivery features the second ValFormer forming section in the world for board making applications. ValFormer represents Metso’s new state–of–the–art hybrid forming technology, which utilizes vacuum shoe technology. It opens new possibilities to improve sheet quality, as well as to increase the capacity of the forming section with a cost–effective investment.

Otsego Paper is a fully–owned subsidiary of the United States Gypsum Company, which in turn is 100 % owned by the USG Corporation.
