Business areas
At Valmet, Flow Control and Automation Solutions are part of the Process Performance Solutions segment. They offer reliable and efficient solutions across various process industries.
Order received are less dependent on large-scale orders; instead, orders are typically smaller in size but larger in quantity. In these businesses, there is an increased focus on enhancing process efficiency, ensuring safety, and maintaining compliance with environmental regulations.
In these business areas, Valmet offers products, solutions and services such as the world’s first online-only Distributed Control System (DCS), DNAe, Quality management Systems (QMS) and a broad offering of specialized valves and actuators.
Comparable EBITA, % of net sales
Pulp, Energy and Circularity, Packaging and Paper, and Tissue business areas are part of the Biomaterial Solutions and Services segments. Their growth is driven by growing demand for sustainable and renewable materials and energy, which increases the need for Valmet’s advanced biomaterial solutions. Orders in these businesses are initially driven by our customers’ investments into production facilities such as board, paper and tissue machines, pulp mills, and biomass power boilers. Additionally, Valmet has the capability to deliver both full board and paper production lines, as well as full tissue production lines with the largest offering in the world. Valmet provides a range of services—including modernization, performance parts, and technical solutions—to support the long-term operation of our customers' critical machines and production lines.

The Flow Control business area’s valves and valve automation technologies are known for quality, reliability and the highest safety. They help customers improve their process performance and environmental efficiency and ensure the safe flow of materials. Customers operate in a variety of global process industries, including the biomaterials industry, renewable energy, oil and gas refining, mining and metals processing, and chemicals.
Valmet’s flow control solutions allow our customers to produce materials that keep our societies and infrastructures up and running. Wherever liquid or gas is moved in a pipe, valves are involved. The role our valves play in the productivity and safety of process plants makes them mission critical.
Flow Control has customers in more than 100 countries and the largest markets are North America and Europe.

Flow Control business area was formed on April 1, 2022, when Neles was merged into Valmet and it has been consolidated into Valmet's financials since April 1, 2022.

The Automation Solutions business area offers industrial automation solutions and services to process industries globally. The main solutions are Distributed Control Systems (DCS), Quality Management Systems (QMS), analyzers and measurements, and automation services.
Valmet’s automation solutions are designed to maximize the profitability and sustainability of customers’ businesses. This is achieved by improving production performance, quality management and energy and material efficiency.
We have delivered nearly 5,000 automation systems and more than 100,000 analyzers and measurements. More than 1,200 power plants worldwide feature Valmet’s process automation.
The most important geographical market for the Automation Systems business line is EMEA, and the second largest area in terms of net sales is North America. Almost half the business consists of services.
Approximately 10-20 percent of the business line’s net sales are generated when automation is sold as part of Valmet’s technology delivery in the Biomaterial Solutions and Services segment. The remaining 80-90 percent are generated from sales to existing global installed base.

The business area provides technology solutions and lifecycle services for pulp and energy production, as well as biomass conversion and emission control in order to maximize the value of renewable raw materials, while increasing production efficiency and minimizing negative environmental impacts.
The Pulp, Energy and Circularity business area supplies designs, installs, and services complete pulp mills and process equipment for chemical and mechanical pulp production, as well as biomass- and waste-fueled power plants, boiler islands, and related environmental systems. Its customers are mainly pulp producers and power and heat producers. The most important geographical markets are Europe, South America and Asia.
Valmet’s pulp production solutions are designed for high raw material efficiency and low chemical and water consumption. Pulp is used mainly as a raw material in producing various paper grades, including board, tissue and printing paper. It is also used for other applications such as textiles and hygiene products.
Valmet’s energy products include boilers, gasifiers, environmental protection systems, technology rebuilds and fuel conversion projects. Valmet is a leading global supplier of biomass-based heat and power generation solutions. The company also supplies complete medium-scale heat and power plants that use biomass and sorted waste as fuel.
Valmet’s emission control solutions are designed to secure safe operation with low emissions. In addition to pulp and energy applications, we have developed technology for various industrial processes and marine exhaust gas emissions.

The Packaging and Paper business area supplies board, paper machinery, equipment, machine rebuilds and lifecycle services for the packaging board and paper industries. The solutions are designed to be fit-for-purpose, focusing on energy and raw material savings, efficiency, flexibility and safety. As a result, our customers’ end products can be manufactured with the highest quality and increased competitiveness on the market. Thanks to our aftermarket lifecycle offering, our machines can stay operational continuously for decades, producing market leading value for Valmet's customers.
Demand for new board and paper machines in recent years has been especially lively in Europe, South America and Asia. Over the years, Valmet has cooperated with its customers in more than 700 board machines and 900 paper machines delivered globally. Today, Valmet also offers its customers extensive Industrial Internet solutions and remote services from Valmet Performance Centres in Jyväskylä, Finland, Karlstad, Sweden, and Lucca, Italy.
Board and paper are used for a variety of purposes, including packaging and writing and printing papers. Board and paper are produced from virgin or recycled pulp.
The papermaking process includes several stages in which the pulp slurry is converted into board or paper through forming, pressing, drying and sizing. In addition, a paper mill includes technology and equipment for stock preparation, air systems, chemical handling and paper finishing, including reeling and winding, automation, flow control and Industrial Internet solutions.
Paper machines can have a lifespan of several decades. Besides new machines, Valmet has a strong position in machine rebuilds and improvements. In addition, converting an existing paper machine to produce a different paper grade or relocating a paper machine is a part of our offering. Global demand for pulp and board production are developing positively, with demand in total mega tonnes projected to grow 2% p.a., especially increasing services demand in these markets.

The Tissue business area delivers end-to-end solutions for the global tissue industry, from fiber to finished products. Our offering includes tissue machines, converting lines for roll and fold products, packaging and embossing solutions, as well as maintenance, upgrades, and performance optimization. We create value throughout the lifecycle by combining advanced technology, tailored services, and digital solutions.
The global tissue market is projected to grow annually through to 2032, driven by rising hygiene awareness, urbanization, and demand for premium and eco-friendly products. Asia-Pacific leads growth, while North America and Europe remain strong. The market is split between consumer products (79%) and away-from-home segments (21%).
Tissue products include toilet paper, facial tissues, paper towels, napkins, and specialty wipes for both consumer and away-from-home segments. Tissue is primarily made from wood pulp (softwood and hardwood fibers), recycled paper, and alternative fibers such as bamboo or sugar cane, processed through pulping, bleaching, sheet formation drying, and creping to achieve softness and strength.
Valmet has delivered over 300 tissue machines and more than 2,400 converting and packaging lines worldwide, supported by a strong global footprint. Our focus on energy efficiency, sustainability, and digitalization helps customers reduce costs and emissions while improving performance. Our diversified portfolio, global installed base, and growing service revenues underpin stability across market cycles. By leveraging innovation and lifecycle partnerships, Valmet is positioned to capture growth and create long-term value for customers and investors.
