Lessons that last beyond the office

In the heart of Karlstad, where quiet streets meet innovation, we meet Deema – a calm and focused force behind the intricate piping systems that bring Valmet’s tissue machines to life. With a deep-rooted love for problem-solving and a passion for learning, Deema has become a valuable member of the Valmet team.

From architecture to engineering – a journey of transformation

Deema’s path to her current role is both unexpected and inspiring. Originally trained as an architect in Syria, where she worked for five years, she arrived in Sweden eight years ago with a desire to start anew. Instead of returning to her previous career, she sought out a field that combined creativity, technical thinking, and a knack for precision. That journey led her to the Piping Design Engineering program at Karlstad Teknikcenter, and eventually to Valmet.

“I chose piping design because, like architecture, it deals with 2D and 3D drawings and problem solving. It felt like a natural step for me,” Deema explains.

At Valmet, Deema’s role as Senior Design Engineer involves far more than meets the eye. On some days, she’s deeply focused on 3D models and detailed 2D drawings. On others, her schedule is filled with team meetings, discussions, and quick problem-solving.

“My work involves routing hydraulic, pneumatic, and lubrication systems, designing not only the path of the pipes but also managing all the peripheral equipment. Team communication is vital. Feedback helps us grow and develop – both the work and ourselves,” she says.

The challenge that became a turning point

Among the many projects she’s worked on, one stands out: a service project for the U.S. involving a primary arm. The challenge? Navigating American standards, something entirely new to her at the time.

“I had to dive into countless catalogs and learn everything from scratch. But it gave me valuable insight, and later I worked on two more U.S. based service projects. That first one really expanded my understanding.”

A workplace that feels like home

To Deema, Valmet stands out not just for its scale and engineering – but for its people, its culture, and its commitment to personal growth.

There’s a unique atmosphere here. It’s calm, supportive, and truly motivating. I’ve never worked in a place with such a positive environment.”

Her team plays a big role in that experience. When asked how her colleagues would describe her, Deema laughs and says she had to ask them directly. “They said I’m positive, a problem solver, and caring. I’m lucky to be part of the most supportive and kind piping team I could ever ask for.”

Outside of work, Deema finds balance and joy in family life. She recharges by listening to music, often classic or artists like Adele and Sia, and spending time with her daughters, who fill the house with the sound of guitar and violin. “That’s my favorite way to relax. Their music makes me happy and full of energy.”

Lessons that last beyond the office

One of the most important things Deema has learned at Valmet isn’t technical, it’s emotional resilience.

Things don’t always go according to plan, especially on site. I’ve learned not to panic, but to stay calm and adapt. Prioritizing based on the situation has become a key mindset for me.”

Deema’s biggest strengths? Her passion for learning, time management, and a constant desire to improve. “I always plan carefully and prioritize so I can deliver what’s needed, when it’s needed. Feedback from my manager and the support from my team really push me to do better.”

Deema’s journey is one of resilience, learning, and heart. And at Valmet, she’s not just helping build machines, she’s helping build a culture of excellence, teamwork, and strength.
