Finding purpose in Procurement: Michel Moser’s career story

For Michel Moser, no two days in Procurement look the same — and that’s exactly what has kept him motivated for more than a decade. Since joining Valmet as a young professional, he has developed into a key leader in tissue converting in Brazil, helping build a resilient, collaborative team that he considers his proudest achievement.

What inspired you to join Valmet, and how has your journey evolved since then?

I joined fifteen years ago when I was 21, long before the company was called Valmet. At that time, I was looking for a place where I could build a career, even though I wasn’t completely sure what I wanted professionally. My first job was in Procurement, and later I moved to Projects in a smaller company, but I missed the intense and dynamic environment of Procurement. When the opportunity came up, I accepted it because of the challenge and the company’s reputation. What I didn’t imagine was that this decision would shape my entire professional identity.

The beginning was difficult, the company was going through a restructuring that created a significant internal knowledge gap, and that pressure fell directly on us. At one point I questioned whether I should continue. Today I’m grateful I did. Looking back, that tough and uncertain period taught me how to handle pressure, find solutions, and mature professionally.

Along this journey, I also invested heavily in my education. I started with a technical degree in Mechanics, later completed my Mechanical Engineering degree while already working at Valmet, and more recently earned an MBA in Business Management and Leadership. Everything I’m today was built here through opportunities, trust, and challenges that helped me grow step by step. Because of that, I feel a strong responsibility to give back with the same level of commitment. I can honestly say Valmet has become my second home.

Can you describe your current role and what a typical day looks like for you?

For more than ten years I’ve been leading the Procurement team for direct materials, indirect materials, and imports in Tissue Converting. Quiet days are rare and that’s exactly what motivates me. My role combines strategy, decision-making, problem-solving, people development, and constant collaboration with global teams. Days are always different. Some require long-term planning, others demand urgent decisions that directly impact our internal customers. This dynamic environment is the essence of the job, making things happen.

Teamwork

What makes your team or workplace culture special?

From my very first interview, I felt something different, a strong sense of belonging and pride in the way people talked about the company. I’ve had the privilege of working with excellent professionals and, most importantly, having a mentor who truly accelerated my development. No one works alone here and that makes all the difference.

Can you share a memorable moment or project that made you feel proud to work here?

After 15 years, it’s difficult to choose just one. We’ve delivered projects many thought were impossible, completed critical negotiations, and I actively participated in factory expansions and the construction of our beautiful administrative building. But what makes me most proud is the Procurement team I helped build: engaged, supportive, resilient, and always willing to make things happen. That is my greatest achievement.

Team Valmet

How does your work contribute to Valmet’s mission or to a more sustainable future?

I see Procurement as an essential part of Valmet’s mission. Our decisions impact the reliability of machines that operate for decades. We contribute to durable solutions and prioritize suppliers aligned with sustainability. Procurement in a capital goods company is one of the most critical gears in the system. We understand our importance and work with that responsibility in mind every day.

What motivates you most about working at Valmet?

When a company invests this much time and opportunity in you, it clearly sees a shared future. That motivates me and creates a strong sense of responsibility to keep growing.

The trust the company has placed in me throughout my career. When a company invests this much time and opportunity in you, it clearly sees a shared future. That motivates me and creates a strong sense of responsibility to keep growing. In many ways it’s like a relationship: for it to be healthy and long-lasting, both sides must contribute. I’m ready to grow even more because I believe that has always been the purpose of the investment made in me.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career at Valmet?

Commit to the journey. Stay curious I believe curiosity is one of the most important qualities, work as a team, and never stop learning. Always be prepared, because the best opportunities appear when you least expect them. Either you’re ready to seize them, or they pass by.

If you had to describe Valmet in three words, what would they be and why?

Trust, growth, and commitment. My story here isn’t about staying in the same place, it’s about growing together with the company.
