Maximized recovery boiler performance with real time visibility
At Metsä Fibre’s Äänekoski bioproduct mill, Valmet Furnace IR Imaging System delivers real time insight into the furnace and smelt bed, enabling better recovery boiler control, improved process stability, and effective emission management.
Metsä Fibre’s Äänekoski bioproduct mill is one of the world’s largest producers of renewable wood‑based products, with an annual pulp capacity of approximately 1.3 million tonnes. In addition to pulp, the mill generates bioenergy and valuable bioproducts such as tall oil and turpentine. Reliable recovery boiler performance is fundamental to sustain this high‑capacity and integrated production.
The mill faced challenges with limited visibility to the smelt bed, affecting operators’ ability to fully understand the furnace conditions and proactively control the process. By implementing Valmet Furnace IR Imaging System, Metsä Fibre gained continuous and clear visibility to the furnace and smelt bed, bringing critical insight directly to the control room.
Real‑time measurements of smelt bed profile, height, and temperature now better support recovery boiler control and optimization. The improved operational awareness enhances process stability, supports effective emission management, and helps Metsä Fibre maintain safe, efficient, and sustainable production.
The IR cameras on our recovery boiler are vital for maintaining a stable and efficient reduction process.
They provide a clear view of the char bed’s shape, height, and temperature profile, enabling precise daily adjustments.
This real-time visibility significantly enhances operational safety by helping us prevent bed instability and detect abnormal conditions early.
