Flow control has found its role in the energy transition

The energy transition is a conversation that cannot be avoided or ignored in the current social and industrial climate. Our customers are busy investing in new ways of producing greener energy for their needs. When it comes to flow control in these new energy applications, our long-standing experience in the industry can help customers move forward with their future energy plans with confidence and peace-of-mind.

Greener energy applications

Some few years ago, the major boom in energy transition was all about green hydrogen. Just a year ago it began receiving even more attention due to the energy crisis in Europe. To achieve climate targets, the focus has been extended now to a way wider scope of different technologies over electrolysis to CCUS and production of biomass-based products.

CCUS captures and stores CO2 emissions. Biomass-based products such as biomethane, bioethanol, PLA and SAF offer renewable alternatives to fossil fuels, reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainability in addition to electrolysis. This is of course good news for Valmet’s flow control business, as we have an extensive background in different processes, and we can also come up with special solutions for any of these technologies, if required.

Demand for new solutions

New energy technologies are already a point of discussion with many of our customers. With new technologies comes new process conditions and demands on the valve technologies involved. Our extensive offering has all the bases covered and can easily help you take new parameters into consideration when making your valve selection. We can, for example, thanks to our material engineering capabilities make suggestions for appropriate material selections in areas that even the customer may not have pre-existing experience of.

Obviously, new processes always bring with them new challenges. The same applies to valves as well. Luckily for our customers, many of the processes and conditions are not new to us in any way. When scaling up from a demo unit to an industrial scale there are always challenges and considerations. We need to ensure that the same type of valve works in the new environment or identify a more appropriate valve solution.

Driving new energy forward

Our engineers and scientists are excited to have a front row seat to the development of new and impactful technologies. Having our flow control solutions play a role in helping companies take major leaps towards achieving their sustainability targets is a source of pride for us at Valmet.

At this time, the field is still wide open. It is virtually impossible to say what the winning technology for producing future energy will be. It is more than likely that whatever becomes the new standard is likely to be a mix of multiple technologies, all finding their own place. We look forward to what the future will bring in terms of new innovations that are waiting to be commercialized and introduced to wider audience.
