Valmet has since 2009 awarded scholarships to over 600 undergraduate students majoring in pulp and paper industry in three Chinese universities. Now, as part of Valmet’s new social responsibility program, the collaboration expands to postgraduate scholarships in five industry universities.

Through the scholarships, Valmet wants to further support industrial talent development and promote innovation in pulp, paper and energy industries.

“Sustainability is at the core of Valmet’s business strategy, and we hope this new initiative will further support postgraduates in their research on low-carbon development and promote circularity in pulp, paper and energy industries. Together we can move these industries forward,” Xiangdong Zhu, China Area President, Valmet, says.

In March 2023, the agreements for the scholarships were signed with the selected universities: Guangxi University, South China University of Technology, Nanjing Forestry University, Qilu University of Technology and Shaanxi University of Science and Technology.

Forward to a carbon neutral future

The scholarships are an important recognition to the best students for their achievements, but the program also boosts the co-operation between Valmet and the universities. Together we promote better understanding of the pulp, paper and energy industries' development in China, the use of the latest technologies and attract future talents. Furthermore, the scholarship programs in China go well together with Valmet's ambitious climate program "Forward to a carbon neutral future".

Valmet's global social responsibility program

Valmet has expanded its global social responsibility program initiated in 2020 with new area-specific local projects around the world.

Valmet’s social responsibility program is part of the company’s sustainability agenda implementation. The program is based on three themes promoting science, nature and equal opportunities: ‘Towards the future with science’, ‘Protecting the planet for next generations’ and ‘Equal opportunities for wellbeing’.

Based on these themes, several local projects in Valmet’s operating areas around the world have been selected to the program. Valmet’s local personnel has participated in the planning and preparation of the projects, and the final selection has been made by employee voting.
