The mill was suffering from typical problems often detected with SCA producers such as wrinkling effects, low hardness profiles and lowered productivity as the number of sets in the jumbo had to be limited. This also increased the losses from bottom and surface broke
Solution
Irving Paper has improved its customer roll throughput and the hardness uniformity on the winder of its PM1 with the help of a new polyurethane-covered Valmet reel drum with integrated iRoll nip load and reel hardness profile measurement and control.
Results
Soon after start-up four sets of 50-inch rolls on every grade were run instead of just two. The mill now produces larger jumbo reels with finished roll profiles, even sheet tension and improved winder productivity.
Thanks to the larger jumbo roll sets and decreased web breaks on the winder, the mill can also now perform maintenance tasks on the winder without needing to wait for a shutdown.
