SUCCESSFUL START-UP IN BRAZIL BY VALMET

Valmet and Brazil’s largest forest corporation, Klabin Fabricadora de Papel e Celulose SA have together successfully started up a world's most unique liquid packaging board coater in the Monte Alegre mill in Parana State, southern Brazil.

The on-machine coater was installed for the PM 7. The coater represents Valmet’s newest liquid packaging board coating technology and is equipped with a two-sided SymSizer surface sizer for pre-coating and backside treatment. Top side coating is applied with Valmet’s recently introduced OptiCoat Duo blade coating station with two backing rolls, a jet nozzle and long dwell time.

Klabin's Monte Alegre is the only board mill in the world where this technology combination is in production use.

In terms of coating properties and process manageability, the concept is excellent. The combination of a SymSizer surface sizer and an OptiCoat Duo coating station allows the customer to flexibly alter coating amounts and, if necessary, to achieve high coat weights, without compromising coating quality and runnability.

The line has a web width of 6300 mm, 248 in, and speed after start-up will range from 400 to 750 m/min, 2133 to 2460 fpm depending on the end product. The line produces boards with basis weights from 150g/m² to 380 g/m².

Valmet’s delivery also comprises a coating color kitchen, air systems, dryers and pulpers. A comprehensive training and start-up program where also included in the delivery. Valmet’s Coaters and Reels Unit at Järvenpää In Finland is in principal responsibility for the delivery, with several other Finnish units of Valmet also participating.

Klabin Fabricadora de Papel e Celulose SA is South America’s largest enterprise integrating all aspects of the forest industry. The corporation owns roughly 350,000 hectares of forest, about 221,000 hectares of which are plantations. Pine and eucalyptus are the principal species.

In Brazil, the corporation has pulp production, paper and board manufacture, and converting operations in a total of 21 business units. In addition, it has three forest units complete with nurseries. Klabin directly employs a personnel of 8650.
