Metso Paper successfully starts up world's largest newsprint line at Shandong Chenming

Shandong Chenming Paper Holdings Ltd. in Shouguang, Shandong province, China has successfully started up the world's largest newsprint line. The Metso Paper supplied production line, which has an annual production capacity exceeding 400,000 tons, features the latest deinking and newsprint manufacturing technology.

The Chenming Shouguang PM 4, which has a design speed of 2,000 m/min and a wire width of 11,150 mm, began continuous production on 30 November 2006 at a speed of 1,607 m/min. The line produces 48.8 g/m2 newsprint of superior quality for the Chinese market.

Said Shandong Chenming's Project Manager Ge Guangming: "We are very satisfied with the smooth start-up and the entire Metso delivery. They have taken full responsibility of the line's processes and controls and we feel very confident about the success of the PM 4 line."

The Metso single supplier delivery contained an OptiConcept paper machine with an on-line calender, two winders, and a 1,500 t/d 2-loop deinking line, which is the largest in the world. From pulping and bleaching to reject handling, the line includes advanced Metso technology for all processes.

In addition, Metso's scope of delivery included approach flow, broke collection and handling and fiber recovery systems, as well as various auxiliary systems. Chemical handling systems for both the deinking line and paper machine were also included in the delivery.

Also, a wide range of automation, control and monitoring systems were supplied for the whole line by Metso Automation.

With an annual production capacity of 3.5 million tons, Shandong Chenming Holdings Ltd. is one of China’s largest paper producers. The company selected Metso Paper as the supplier of their new deinking and papermaking lines thanks to the long-term co-operation between the companies. Metso Paper's previous major deliveries to the Chenming group include four complete paper machines - Shouguang PM 1 in 1998, Shouguang PM 2 and Wuhan Chenming PM 1 in 2002, and Jiangxi Chenming PM 1 in 2005 - as well as a CTMP line to the Shouguang mill in 2005.

Metso is a global engineering and technology corporation with 2005 net sales of approximately EUR 4.2 billion. Its 22,000 employees in more than 50 countries serve customers in the pulp and paper industry, rock and minerals processing, the energy industry and selected other industries. www.metso.com
