Learning curves and life as a PRO trainee

Aug 4, 2023

The world of project management offers multiple different learning opportunities, especially for students. We had a chance to interview Jenni Sammaljoki, who joined Valmet’s Project Professional Trainee Program in the spring 2023. What has surprised Jenni the most and what are her biggest learnings as a trainee? Let’s plunge into Jenni’s trainee adventure!

Who are you and what is your background?

“Hello everyone! My name is Jenni, and I wanted to share my Project Professional trainee (PRO Trainee) experience as a fifth-year student from Tampere University, currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Industrial Engineering and Management (IEM). I'm stoked to be part of this freshly new trainee program in Valmet that has opened a world of opportunities for me.

I am majoring in Strategic Technology and Project Management, so this program has been a great fit for my studies. I have a slightly different background than most IEM students since I have completed my Bachelor’s in Science and Engineering also here in Hervanta, Tampere.”

What are your main responsibilities as a PRO trainee?

“I have been given the opportunity to learn more about scheduling and project execution follow-up. I have been given my own smaller project to run the progress reports. The other main area gives me the opportunity to see the functioning of a Project Management Office (PMO) while supporting project managers in tracking the project execution, progress, and milestones with a separate project management tool. Excitingly, I'll be visiting a Valmet site during the summer for a period of two to three weeks, which will provide valuable experience.”

Has something surprised you during this program?

“Throughout this trainee program, I've been pleasantly surprised by the incredible diversity among project professional trainees. We come from various backgrounds, have different academic years, and bring unique perspectives to the table. The separate orientation period was another positive and meaningful surprise. It enhanced our area knowledge and allowed us to build supportive relationships and expand our network. Let’s not forget the enjoyable coffee breaks that have provided opportunities for informal interactions and bonding!”

All in all, I couldn't be more excited about this trainee program and the invaluable experiences it has provided me. I'm thrilled to continue my journey, learn, and grow as a professional, and make the most out of this one-time opportunity.

Are there any valuable learnings you would like to share with others?

“This trainee program has deepened my understanding of various project management factors. It has been incredibly fulfilling to apply the theoretical knowledge I gained through completed courses to practical situations. I've gained insights into the significance of PMOs, reporting, and follow-up. Participating in project reviews has also opened my eyes to the multitude of activities that take place behind the scenes.”

Do you have any expectations for the future?

“Looking ahead, I have high expectations for what this program has in store for me. Firstly, I'm eagerly waiting for the site experience, where I'll get to see the implementation of projects in real-world settings. I'm excited about the opportunity to visit a manufacturing plant and observe the project execution firsthand, interacting with professionals on-site. Lastly, I have the expectation of developing a broader perspective on project management by working on cross-functional projects. This will enable me to collaborate with professionals from different departments, such as engineering, operations, and finance, and gain insights into their roles and contributions to project success.”

Other highlights during the Project Professional Trainee Program you would like to share?

“In addition to the above, I've had the pleasure of visiting various Valmet locations, which has been both educational and inspiring. Working alongside other talented trainees and forming connections within my own team has been an absolute joy. All in all, I couldn't be more excited about this trainee program and the invaluable experiences it has provided me. I'm thrilled to continue my journey, learn, and grow as a professional, and make the most out of this one-time opportunity.

In the upcoming autumn, I'll be challenging myself with a study exchange semester in Innsbruck, Austria, where I am hoping to meet new people and gain different experiences. After coming back to Finland, I’ll work on my thesis in the spring.”
