New lignin qualities with LignoBoost

New qualities with LignoBoost

Valmet’s LignoBoost process has been developed further and extended. New process concepts from Valmet can tailor LignoBoost lignin into different qualities.

Lignin is extensively studied, and the number of patent applications involving lignin increases rapidly. Valmet has, together with partners, developed several add-on processes that allow for tailoring and upgrading of LignoBoost lignin.

Water soluble, sulfonated lignin

A new process available from Valmet enables production of a very pure, sulfonated LignoBoost lignin. The sulfonation process, developed together with RISE Bioeconomy, is free from formaldehyde. The product is a sulfonated lignin that dissolves well in water and has a high degree of active content. This enables cost effective use in a wide range of dispersant applications.

LignoBoost lignin for PET

Lignin can be used to produce a bio-based version of PET, a thermoplastic polymer used in synthetic fibers and containers for food and beverage. The world production of PET is according to reports currently above 20 million tons per year, and rising.

Odor free lignin

Valmet and RISE Bioeconomy have developed a process that makes it possible to remove 97% of the odorous compounds in LignoBoost lignin. This makes it possible to use LignoBoost lignin in applications close to consumers.

Going forward

Lignin is extensively studied, and the number of patent applications involving lignin increases rapidly. To further develop the value of lignin and technology around it, Valmet cooperates with RISE BioeconomyRenFuelLignoCityIACMISwerea IVF and others.
