A Valmet paper machine, delivered by Metso Paper, has set a new world speed record for fine paper production at Nordland Papier, in Dörpen, Germany. The mill's PM 4 ran at 1504 m/min (4,934 fpm) for 33 hours on 13-14 November 2001 and thus became the first fine paper machine to exceed the speed of 1500 m/min. This corresponds to an average speed of 90 km/h.

For the last 24 hours, the paper machine reached an operating time efficiency of 89.5%, running a 58 g/m² grade (base paper for WFC).

The machine's net production width of 9,5 m (374 in.) makes it Europe's largest fine paper machine. The length of the paper produced during the 33 hours totaled almost 3,000 km, equivalent to the distance from the northern Germany mill to Casablanca, Morocco.

Said Jürgen Hoppe, Technical Manager: "In the future Nordland Papier will produce paper at this speed level for a long time." Dörpen PM 4 was originally started up in 1991 and rebuilt with Valmet OptiFormer and OptiPress in 1999.

Metso Paper -supplied Valmet paper machines dominate the current world speed record rankings, as follows:

Woodfree fine paper and base paper 1st Nordland Papier, Dörpen PM 4, 1504 m/min 2nd ShinMoorim Paper, Chinju PM 3 (Korea), 1472 m/min

Newsprint 1st Norske Skog, Golbey PM 2 (France), 1902 m/min 3rd Sachsen Papier, Eilenburg PM 1 (Germany), 1728 m/min

SC paper 1st Stora Port Hawkesbury PM 2 (Canada), 1703 m/min 2nd UPM-Kymmene, Jämsänkoski PM 6 (Finland) , 1664 m/min 3rd Saugbrugsforeningen, Halden PM 6 (Norway) , 1659 m/min

LWC paper 1st UPM-Kymmene, Rauma PM 4 (Finland), 1751 m/min 2nd Haindl Papier, Augsburg PM 3 (Germany), 1723 m/min 3rd UPM-Kymmene, Kaipola PM 6 (Finland), 1610 m/min
