Valmet receives a repeat order for steam turbine and motor-driven turbo compressor control systems from Borealis Polymers in Porvoo, Finland

Valmet Oyj's press trade release on June 21, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. EET

Valmet has received a repeat order for steam turbine and motor-driven turbo compressor control systems from Borealis Polymers Oy's ethylene plant in Porvoo, Finland. The solution will be started up during the plant turnaround scheduled for autumn 2017.

The order is included in Valmet's second quarter 2016 orders received. The value of the order will not be disclosed. An order of this scope is typically valued below EUR 1 million.

In autumn 2015, a similar control system on another turbo compressor was commissioned in the plant. Experiences gained to date with the first installation have been very positive. The comprehensive compressor automation solution protects the entire turbomachinery, the plant's most critical capital investment, from excessive speeds, unplanned outages or failures. It meets the requirements for plant safety, lower energy costs and higher efficiency of industrial processes.

"We will now get process control and compressor control, including anti-surge protection, in one integrated system. The platform is open, without any closed parts, and machine-related data can be viewed conveniently together with other process data in a plant-wide automation system," says Stefan Smeds, team leader for Advanced Process Control, Borealis Polymers Oy.

Solution developed in close cooperation with a turbomachinery control expert

This advanced compressor control solution has been developed in close cooperation by Valmet and Control-Care, a Dutch expert in turbomachinery control solutions.

"Valmet's most up-to-date open architecture automation platform has been combined with Control-Care's unmatched applications and field experience on compressor controls," comments Johan Musch, Product Manager, Automation, Valmet.

"The two companies working together provide unmatched capabilities in compressor controls automation. The combination of Valmet's hardware technology and our experience in the development of portable software applications for turbomachinery control is perfect for controlling any type of turbo compressor. Customers will welcome efficient and reliable protection as well as reduced operating costs," says Tom Langezaal, Director of Sales and Applications, Control-Care.

Technical details about the delivery

Valmet delivers the compressor control system hardware based on its Valmet DNA platform to replace an aging control system. Control-Care is responsible for the delivery and integration of turbomachinery controls application software with the platform. The system also includes an Antisurge Control Application (ACA), a Steam Turbine Control Application (STCA) and a Load-Balancing or Station Control Application (SCA) developed and supplied by Control-Care. Developed to provide tighter control over the compressor's working area, including surge protection for compressors, alarm management capabilities and load balancing between compressors, this solution allows the most efficient use of rotating equipment.

Onsite commissioning, testing and surge validation are included in the delivery scope, too.
