Avoid common workplace injuries by using safe material handling

Jan 1, 2019

Most workplace injuries (almost 60%) are the result of common, everyday missteps such as overexertion and slips/trips/falls, not from violent events, crashes or exposure to harmful substances. The most common workplace injuries and their causes are listed below:

  1. Sprains, strains and tears caused by overexertion
  2. Non-specified injuries and disorders (soreness/swelling) caused by overexertion
  3. Contusions caused by contact with object/equipment
  4. Fractures caused by slips/trips/falls
  5. Lacerations caused by contact with object/equipment

This underscores how important it is to be mindful of your surroundings and stay aware when performing and observing everyday activities to prevent these injuries from happening to you and those around you.

Manual handling of material or product can cause injury if not done properly. Avoid lifting excessively heavy loads without assistance (mechanical or otherwise), avoid bending or twisting improperly while lifting, avoid lifting while in an awkward position, ensure you keep the load close to you, and ensure that you're aware of any sharp edges that must be avoided.
