Valmet to deliver eight dry solids measurement units to boost sustainability at Shanghai Zhuyuan Wastewater Treatment Plant 3 in China

Valmet will supply eight Valmet Dry Solids Measurement (Valmet DS) units to Shanghai Zhuyuan Wastewater Treatment Plant 3, which is currently under construction in China. With this online solution, the new plant will be able to boost sustainability by using lower amounts of polymers and less energy in centrifugation and sludge incineration. The online measurements will also provide the plant with labor cost savings.
The delivery is an important breakthrough for Valmet DS technology in the vast Chinese market, where increasing focus is given to environmental issues and better wastewater treatment.
The order is included in Valmet's fourth quarter of 2017 orders received. The devices will be delivered in February 2018. The new wastewater treatment plant will be started up in the second quarter of 2018.
"With Valmet DS, the plant will be able to better monitor the dryness of the dry cake as well as gain polymer and energy savings. The investment payback period is short," says Mr. Gu who acts as Valmet's local distributor at Shanghai Zexi in China.
"In general, large wastewater treatment plants have reached excellent results with our Valmet technology. With only a 1% higher dry cake solids content, it is possible to save about 100,000 euros annually and 20% in polymer costs. Additional savings can be achieved through reduced transportation costs. We see a bright future for this technology not only in China but globally," says Kevin Li, Channel Manager, Automation, Valmet.

Valmet's delivery consists of eight Valmet DS units for the new Shanghai Zhuyuan Wastewater Treatment Plant's eight centrifuges. The Valmet DS unit's safe, low-power microwave technology enables stable and accurate measurements of between 15 to 35% of total solids to be utilized by the feedback control to optimize polymer dosage and centrifugation. This decreases energy consumption through better torque control.
Additionally, Valmet will deliver two Valmet Total Solids Measurement (Valmet TS) units based on microwave technology. Valmet TS is a reliable and accurate meter for all wastewater sludge treatment applications of up to 40% of total solids, providing savings in energy, polymer dosing and transportation.

When finished, Shanghai Zhuyuan Wastewater Treatment Plant 3 will have a capacity of about 800,000 tons per day and serve about three million people in Shanghai, China.
