UPM-Kymmene Kaukas mill in Finland has placed an order for a fully automated Valmet WinRoll winder representing the latest technology in multistation winding. Kaukas PM 1 and PM2 produce LWC/MWC papers 35-115 g/m².

The Kaukas WinRoll winder with a trim width of 7600 mm will start up in January 2001. The design speed of the extremely high capacity winder is 3000 m/min. WinRoll is the first multistation winder ever to feature Continuous Winding. A printing house quality butt-joint splicer and full-width web threading are also features of the Kaukas WinRoll.

The Kaukas winder is the sixth WinRoll ordered by UPM-Kymmene.The first one started up at UPM-Kymmene’s Voikkaa mill in April 1997. In 1998, two additional WinRoll winders started up on the UPM-Kymmene Rauma PM 4 LWC line.

The SC-rotogravure production from UPM-Kymmene Jämsänkoski mill’s PM 5 is handled by one WinRoll winder. After its start-up in February 2000 the WinRoll has set records for both speed (3000 m/min) and roll size (4.4 meters wide, 1.5 meters in diameter and 10,000 kg). A WinRoll winder will also start-up in August 2001 at the Kymi Paper Kuusankoski mill.
