Modern Karton's board making line up and running in Turkey

The Metso-supplied, complete board making line of Modern Karton Sanayi Ticaret AS in Corlu, Turkey, successfully came on stream on April 20, 2008. The new production line has an annual capacity of 400,000 tonnes of testliner and corrugating medium in the basis weight range of 70 – 120 g/m2, using 100 per cent recycled raw material. The wire width of the board machine is 8.6 m and the design speed 1,800 m/min.
The successful start-up was an evidence of the good co-operation between the project teams of Modern Karton and Metso. “The implementation of a project of this magnitude brings out the best sides of both parties – only working together yields results,” concludes Mr Ali Ihsan Aras, Technical Co-ordinator of the Eren Group. “We rely on good co-operation with Metso also in the future.”
The new board mill in Corlu is a showcase of the latest, environmentally-friendly board making technology, using minimal natural resources. The concept comprises several new solutions for low-effluent operation, including OCC line, stock preparation, reject handling as well as water management system. The OCC line was brought into use in late February and the operations were optimized to ensure a smooth board machine start-up. Highly efficient cleaning and sticky reduction, together with compact and controlled water management, provide excellent product quality and high runnability, despite the lower- quality raw material.
The PM 4 board machine wet end concept includes an OptiFormer gap forming section with new headbox technology to ensure adequate water removal and a strong web at high speed. A SymPress shoe press section provides high dryness. Effective curl control is taken care of by an OptiDry Horizontal impingement dryer. A WinDrum Pro winder gives the mill the capability for high-capacity winder throughput. The delivery also included a comprehensive automation package by Metso Automation, comprising process, machine and quality controls, profilers, automated valves, analyzers, consistency measurements and field instruments.
