UPM-Kymmene has selected Metso Paper to rebuild its PM 1 on-machine coater in Rauma, Finland. The rebuild will improve the machine’s competitiveness by raising its capacity. The rebuilt machine will start up in spring 2003.

The machine produces offset and rotogravure LWC grades in the 57–90 g/m² range. Its operating speed is 1400 m/min and the web width on the reel is 8,280 mm.

The delivery will include two OptiCoat Jet application beams, FoilForce tail threading equipment, a metsoDNA process control system and a large dryer section rebuild in which most of the electric IR dyers will be replaced by gas-heated PowerDry and TurnDry air dryers. A rebuild of the coating machine circulation will also be in the delivery. When the machine was originally started up in 1969, it was the widest in the world.
