Metso Paper has received new TMP pulping line orders from Stora Enso’s Varkaus and Port Hawkesbury Mills. Major reasons for Metso Paper’s success in securing these projects are proven references for high-capacity mechanical pulping lines, demonstrated high availability of such large production lines, and a strong local presence and support.

600 tpd TMP pulping line to Stora Enso’s Varkaus Mill

Stora Enso has selected Metso Paper to supply a new TMP (thermomechanical pulp) line to its Varkaus Newsprint Mill in Finland. The new line will replace the mill’s existing groundwood plant. The design capacity of the TMP line is 600 tpd, with a maximum capacity up to 650 - 700 tpd. The delivery includes all main process technology for chip washing, main line refining and screening, rejects thickening, refining and screening, steam separation, heat recovery and post refining. The installation is scheduled to begin in November 2003, with start-up in June 2004.

The Varkaus Newsprint Mill has two paper machines, PM2 and PM4, for newsprint and directory paper. The new TMP line will feed both of these paper machines.

780 tpd TMP pulping line to Stora Enso’s Port Hawkesbury Mill

Metso Paper has received an order from Stora Enso North America covering delivery of a new TMP line to the Port Hawkesbury Mill in Nova Scotia, Canada. The new line will replace existing stone groundwood (SGW) and high-yield sulphite (HYS) plants. The design capacity of the TMP line is 780 tpd, with a maximum capacity up to 880 tpd. The delivery includes all main process technology for chip washing, main line refining and screening, as well as rejects refining. In addition, Metso Automation will supply a DCS system to the mill. The installation starts in January 2004 and start-up is scheduled for September 2004.

The Port Hawkesbury Mill has two paper machines: PM1 produces newsprint and PM2 supercalendered SC-A+ grade paper. The new TMP line will mainly feed PM1.
