An opening ceremony was held in Oulu, Finland on April 10, 2003 for the new state-of-the-art production facility of Metso Composites Oy (formerly Oulun Kumitehdas Oy), a unit of Metso Paper Service.

The new composite roll plant finished at the start of this year and a rubber covering facility expansion slated for completion during the summer of 2003 will enable Metso Composites to offer a full range of rubber coated and composite rolls. These investments complement the enhanced and expanded range of service products offered by Metso Paper’s maintenance services unit in keeping with Metso’s Future Care business concept.

The composite roll plant, which will concentrate on the development, production and servicing of carbon fiber spreader rolls and composite structures used in fiber and paper manufacturing, has approximately 3,000 square meters of floor space. The production methods of the roll coating unit will also be supplemented with extruder technology, a steam oven, and a new roll grinder in connection with this investment project. The plant’s lifting capacity will be brought up to 60 metric tons.

Composite-based tube rolls are typically used on fast paper machines as paper guide rolls for web tension measurement, for example. Composite spreader rolls, meanwhile, are employed at demanding paper spreading positions on coaters, calenders winders, and the like. Among the many advantages of reliable and light-weight composite rolls are also their steady operation and limited maintenance needs.

Metso Composites has some 50 employees in Oulu. The company’s annual composite roll production capacity is approximately 200 rolls and rubber coating capacity roughly 700 rolls.
