A wood fired biomass CHP plant to Independent Biomass Systems in Ireland

Dec 12, 2013

Valmet*) has provided a wood fired biomass Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plant to Independent Biomass Systems, a joint venture company comprised of South Western Services Co-operative Society Limited (SWS Group) and Irish Soft Woods Ltd (Grainger Sawmills Limited).

The power plant has been constructed next to a sawmill and it is a full EPC delivery including a BioPower 2 hot water CHP plant with a BioGrate combustion chamber, steam boiler and steam turbine, connections to the customer’s processes as well as an extensive 400m long fuel conveyor system from the sawmill. Using by-products from the mill in the form of wood residues, the CHP plant generates 1.8 MW electricity to the national grid and 3.5 MW of heat to dry construction timber in sawmill’s kilns.

The installation enables Grainger Sawmills, one of the largest sawmills in Ireland, to address an electricity deficit in its current operations.
